What is Cap and Trade?

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009   |   Headlines.

News came out yesterday that 76% of Americans don’t know what cap and trade is. Uh oh. Why is that bad? Because it’s big, important environmental policy that our legislature is currently hammering out, and it will affect the way our carbon-intensive economy works.

If you’re in the 24% of Americans in the know about cap and trade, good for you. If you’re not so lucky, check out this short video made by a very enthusiastic Hank Green over at EcoGeek. It’s only 3 1/2 minutes long, and you might learn a thing or two.

If you’re not a video person, the Center for American Progress has nice little summary called Cap and Trade 101 here.

Or maybe you want to have more than a cocktail party level of familiarity with carbon policy. Head on over to the World Resources Institute’s summary of the Waxman-Markey bill (which includes cap and trade, among other things) to learn the ins and outs of the whole bill.
