Help Reduce Las Vegas Hot Spots’ Carbon Footprint in 2009

AUSTIN, Texas (May 5, 2009) – BeGreen (<a href="http://www,begreennow.com"target="_blank">www.begreennow.com), the carbon offset division of Green Mountain Energy, and the N9NE Group, a Las Vegas-based nightlife and hospitality company, is implementing two separate initiatives designed to make its popular Las Vegas’ hot spots more environmentally-conscious.

Now, guests of Rain Nightclub, ghostbar, Moon Nightclub and Playboy Club can have their fun and “green” it too with the launch of the BeGreen green ticket option – an online ticket add-on that guests can purchase to neutralize the environmental impact associated with their visit to the venues. Guests who reserve tickets through the N9NE Group’s Web site (<a href="http://www.n9negroup.com"target="_blank">www.n9negroup.com) can “green up” their purchase by adding $2.50 to the cost of any regular priced ticket. The BeGreen ticket offsets an estimated 332 pounds of CO2 and purchases 100 kWh of renewable energy made from sources like wind and biomass.

“Last year the N9NE Group paved the way by becoming one of the first of Vegas’ major entertainment companies to make ‘green’ a key focus for their venues,” said Gillan Taddune, chief environmental officer of Green Mountain Energy Company. “Showing that they’re truly dedicated to environmental sustainability, the N9NE Group has not only renewed their commitment by offsetting their carbon emissions again this year, but they’ve taken it a step further by allowing customers to get involved through the ‘green’ ticketing option.”

Furthering its commitment to the environment, the N9NE Group is also purchasing renewable energy credits (RECs) to offset 100 percent of the total calculated carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions associated with their estimated electricity, natural gas, and refrigerant usage in 2009 for six of their Las Vegas venues including N9NE Steakhouse, Nove Italiano, Rain Nightclub, ghostbar, Moon Nightclub and Playboy Club at the Palms Casino Resort. The RECs have the same environmental impact as taking approximately 518 cars off the road or the sequestration of 349,000 trees each year. Their purchase will offset approximately 2,497 metric tons of CO2 emissions.

“The N9NE Group is proud to provide the best food and nightlife that Las Vegas has to offer,” says Co-owner and Director of Community Relations, Jenna Morton. “We just believe in doing it sustainably. This year, we’ve decided to make it easy for our guests to do the same thing with the simple option of the BeGreen ticket.”

About BeGreen Carbon Offsets

BeGreen Carbon Offsets (www.begreennow.com) is a division of Green Mountain Energy Company, the longest serving green power provider in the U.S. BeGreen provides education about the serious effects of harmful carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and offers businesses and consumers simple and effective ways to reduce their carbon footprint through the purchase of renewable energy, forest sequestration and other project-based offsets. BeGreen’s carbon calculators follow the EPA Climate Leaders methodology, which is based on the World Resources Institute’s Greenhouse Gas Protocol (WRI GHG), a widely accepted industry standard. All purchases and sales of BeGreen’s carbon offset projects are also verified by an independent auditing firm to ensure their quality and effectiveness.

About the N9NE Group

The N9NE Group is a partnership between pioneering entertainment entrepreneurs Michael Morton and Scott DeGraff. Although the company was founded in 1992, the two have been friends since age nine, a fact commemorated in the company name. The son of legendary restaurateur Arnie Morton (Morton’s of Chicago steakhouses), Morton grew up in the restaurant business, while DeGraff pursued a career in law—becoming a real estate attorney at one of Chicago’s most prominent firms—all the while retaining his passion for great food and entertainment. Today, N9NE Group operates a total of ten venues nationwide: seven Las Vegas venues, including N9NE Steakhouse, Nove Italiano, Rain Nightclub, ghostbar, Moon Nightclub, Playboy Club and Palms Pool & Bungalows); two Chicago venues, including N9NE Steakhouse and ghostbar; and ghostbar in Dallas.

A Portion of Ticket Sales Will Go Towards the Purchase of Renewable Energy Credits; BeGreen to Donate Additional Credits to Offset Electricity Used for Game.

April 7, 2009, Austin, Texas – Encouraging fans to take action to reduce their environmental footprint, the Los Angeles Clippers and BeGreen , the carbon offset division of Green Mountain Energy Company, are teaming up to host the first-ever Green Night Game at STAPLES Center.

On Saturday, April 11, as part of the team’s game against the Portland Trail Blazers, the Clippers hope to boost awareness of and support Earth Day 2009 by using a portion of the ticket sales from the game to purchase renewable energy credits (RECs) that will neutralize the environmental impact of fans’ travel to and from the game. BeGreen also will donate additional RECs to offset the electricity usage at STAPLES Center on April 11.

Green Night Game will also include a number of “green-themed” activities, including in-game announcements about ways to help the environment.

To further encourage fans to take action, BeGreen and the Clippers have created a series of short videos featuring Clippers center, DeAndre Jordan providing tips for going “green.” To help spread the word, the videos are posted on BeGreen’s YouTube channel where Clippers fans and general “green” enthusiasts can download and event post the clips to their own site.

“In partnership with the Los Angeles Clippers organization, their players and their fans, we’ve put together a strong ‘green team,’” said Gillan Taddune, chief environmental officer of Green Mountain Energy Company. “We hope that other sports organizations will follow the Clippers franchise by taking steps to incorporate environmentally responsible actions into their own business plans. Whether you’re a sports fan or not, taking steps to reduce our carbon footprints is an effort that we can all get behind.”

RECs present an innovative solution for businesses looking to do their part in the fight against global climate change by offsetting carbon emissions and their impact on the environment. Carbon emissions are created by normal daily activities like using electricity, driving a car or flying on an airplane. Each REC represents the environmental attributes resulting from the generation of 1 MWH (1,000 KWH) of electricity by renewable energy generators. And by purchasing RECs, businesses and consumers are able to reduce their carbon footprint through an investment in renewable energy sources.

By offsetting the electricity for the game, BeGreen and the Clippers will prevent more than 42,000 pounds of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere – the environmental equivalent of recycling 104,000 aluminum cans or 16,000 pounds of newspaper.

“Green Night Game adds to a host of activities that the L.A. Clippers organization has put into place to reduce our environmental footprint,” said Heath Bennett, director of sales for the Los Angeles Clippers. “We hope that fans will join us in this effort to go green and that ultimately they’ll consider other ways to reduce their impact on the environment.”

Tickets for Green Night Game will be the same price as regular game tickets. To purchase tickets, fans can go to http://www.clippers.com/gogreen.

Carbon Offset Purchase Will Offset 100 Percent of Shaklee’s Annual Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Austin, TX (PRWEB) November 11, 2008 — Green Mountain Energy Company, a pioneer in renewable energy and the nation’s leading provider of cleaner energy, has teamed up with the Shaklee Corporation, the leading natural nutrition company in the U.S., to offset 100 percent of Shaklee’s annual direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions. A pioneer in environmental stewardship, in 2000, Shaklee became the first company in the world to be Climate NeutralTM certified to totally offset its greenhouse gas emissions, resulting in a net zero impact on the environment. This new partnership maintains Shaklee’s commitment to be a carbon neutral enterprise.

By taking the initiative to voluntarily offset its greenhouse gas emissions, Shaklee is adding to a long list of green initiatives that have helped the company become a model for environmental stewardship
We have a lot of admiration for all of the effort that Shaklee puts into preserving our planet and its natural resources.
Creating long-lasting improvement in the environment is such a critical part of Shaklee’s promise to its customers
The purchase of these carbon offsets is part of our commitment to help make people and the planet healthier, and we hope that our actions will encourage other companies to take steps to reduce their impact on the environment.
The agreement with Green Mountain Energy Company and its BeGreen Carbon Offsets division will allow Shaklee to offset 100 percent of its anticipated carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from indirect sources (purchased electricity) for two years through the purchase of 12,000 Green-e Certified Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) for 100% nationally sourced wind energy projects. Shaklee will also purchase 1,000 metric tons of carbon offsets from methane capture projects located within the United States to offset direct emissions associated with fuel consumption in its buildings and vehicles.

In total, the agreement will reduce Shaklee’s carbon footprint by more than 6,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent–equal to the environmental benefit of planting 800,000 trees.

“By taking the initiative to voluntarily offset its greenhouse gas emissions, Shaklee is adding to a long list of green initiatives that have helped the company become a model for environmental stewardship,” said Gillan Taddune, chief environmental officer of Green Mountain Energy Company. “We have a lot of admiration for all of the effort that Shaklee puts into preserving our planet and its natural resources.”

“Creating long-lasting improvement in the environment is such a critical part of Shaklee’s promise to its customers,” said Tim Smith, Senior Director of Sustainable Development for Shaklee Corporation. “The purchase of these carbon offsets is part of our commitment to help make people and the planet healthier, and we hope that our actions will encourage other companies to take steps to reduce their impact on the environment.”

Sales of BeGreen’s “green” ticket option quadruple from 2007 as more concert-goers decide to offset their concert-going carbon emissions

September 10, 2008, Austin, Texas – BeGreen (www.begreennow.com), the carbon offset division of Green Mountain Energy Company, announced today the resounding success of the BeGreen Fan Tag, a “green” ticketing option that allows concert-goers to minimize the environmental impact of traveling to concerts and festivals.

As of today, BeGreen has distributed more than 10,000 Fan Tags – more than four times the amount in 2007 – to concert-goers for the 2008 Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits Festivals. As a result, festival-goers have helped prevent more than 6.8 million pounds of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere-the environmental equivalent of taking 600 cars off the road for one year.

“The support we’ve received for the Fan Tag has been overwhelming and has exceeded all expectations,” said Gillan Taddune, chief environmental officer of Green Mountain Energy Company. “In 2007, more than 2,000 concert-goers added the Fan Tag to their ticket purchase for Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits combined. And this year, even with a more uncertain economic climate, more than 10,000 music fans have shown their support for the environment by adding the Fan Tag to their ticket purchase. It’s exciting to see so many fans opting to do something quick and easy that makes a real impact.”

The success of the Fan Tag illustrates a growing interest from musicians and their fans who together have become a driving force for the environmental movement. Popular artists have become known for their efforts to reduce the environmental impact of their concerts through activities such as running tour buses on eco-friendly bio-fuels, avoiding plastics, using solar powered sound and stages and offsetting travel with carbon offsets. G. Love & Special Sauce has taken the environmental message to the social networking platform by setting up MySpace pages devoted to “green” initiatives and using video (http://www.myspace.com/glovebegreen) to educate fans about way to make a difference. In addition to Lollapalooza and the Austin City Limits festival, BeGreen has also provided “green” ticketing options for the Telluride Blues and Brews Festival, Camp Bisco and the Asheville Music Jamboree.

Beginning in 2007, BeGreen worked with the organizers of Austin City Limits Festival and Lollapalooza to create a “green” ticket option that allows individuals the opportunity to minimize the environmental impact of traveling to the festivals. For an additional $5, music fans have the option of “going green” by adding the BeGreen Fan Tag option when purchasing concert tickets through the festival Web sites at www.aclfestival.com and www.lollapalooza.com.

Each Fan Tag is equal to offsetting 500 kWh of energy usage and is used to http://www.begreennow.com [purchase renewable energy credits] from cleaner sources, such as solar and wind-generated energy. With each purchase, concert-goers also receive a unique, double-sided BeGreen Fan Tag sticker that can be displayed at the event to show off their environmental consciousness.

With only two weeks left until the Austin City Limits Festival, eco-minded concert-goers can get their own BeGreen Fan Tag by following these simple steps:

1. Log on to www.aclfestival.com to purchase tickets
2. During the check-out process, look for the “Offset Your Carbon Impact Now” link at the bottom of the page
3. Click “Add To Cart” and the Fan Tag will automatically be added to the purchase

Attendees can pick-up their Fan Tag during the concert at the BeGreen booth. BeGreen Fan Tags can also be purchased at the booth.

JUNE 24 – AUSTIN, TX – With the growing popularity of the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system, Green Mountain Energy Company announced today the launch of its new Web-based BeGreen Business LEED calculator (http://www.begreennow.com/leed_credit_calculator) that makes it easy for businesses to calculate and purchase certified renewable energy credits (RECs) to qualify for Green Power points for LEED certification. BeGreen (http://begreennow.com) is Green Mountain’s one-stop shop for carbon offsets, RECs and other innovative carbon management and renewable energy products and services for businesses, institutions and individual consumers nationwide.

Designed for architects, builders and building managers, the BeGreen Business LEED calculator may be used with all four primary LEED certification types: new construction and major renovation, existing buildings, commercial interiors and core and shell construction (which includes base building elements such as structure, envelope and heating, ventilation and cooling systems). The tool allows businesses to calculate the number of RECs required to meet the Green Power LEED certification standard, based on actual or estimated energy usage. Users are provided with a summary of the energy usage and a cost estimate for purchasing the RECs.

LEED Made Simple

Businesses can easily calculate the estimated amount of RECs needed for LEED certification credit by entering basic information such as the building’s square footage, the type of LEED certification desired, the building’s principal activity and the number of years to be covered by the REC purchase. The calculator totals the amount per year, increasing the amount of RECs over the course of the contract to account for inefficiencies that may come as the building ages. With each purchase, businesses immediately receive a certificate of purchase and a power content label verifying that the RECs meet the Green Power LEED certification standard via e-mail.
BeGreen’s New Brand – BeGreen Business

The unveiling of the new BeGreen Business LEED calculator coincides with the launch of BeGreen Business – Green Mountain’s new carbon management brand identity for commercial and institutional customers. BeGreen Business provides commercial clients with innovative and cost effective carbon solutions designed to help improve their environmental position. The new branding platform simplifies and combines the identity of BeGreen’s business and consumer products.

“Each year, we’ve seen an increase in the number of businesses looking for help in navigating the often complicated LEED certification process,” said Gillan Taddune, chief environmental officer of Green Mountain Energy Company. “And having been through the process of achieving LEED certification for our corporate offices in Austin, Texas, firsthand, we know what it’s like for businesses going down that path. We’re confident that this tool will make it easier for more companies to achieve LEED certification while ultimately reducing their collective environmental footprint at the same time.”

Since 2006, Green Mountain has provided RECs to businesses, such as Honda Motor Co., Herman Miller and Wachovia as part of LEED certification projects. With Herman Miller, for instance, BeGreen provides RECs for more than a dozen manufacturing sites and corporate office locations around the country.

“As a founder of the U.S. Green Building Council and an early adopter of its LEED program, we’ve welcomed the trend toward sustainable buildings as more and more businesses strive to reduce their global footprint through LEED certification each year,” said Mark Schurman, Herman Miller’s director of corporate communications. “BeGreen has been a valued partner in helping us progress in our own sustainable goals. We hope that this new tool will encourage and enable others to consider their own renewable energy strategy and LEED certification.”

BeGreen Carbon Offsets Partners with the Pacific Forest Trust to Offer Carbon Offsets from California’s First State-Backed Emissions Reduction Project

AUSTIN, TX and SAN FRANCISCO – June 3, 2008 – The same carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions reductions that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and other political and business leaders have purchased to help offset their respective carbon footprints are now available to the public.

The Pacific Forest Trust and BeGreen Carbon Offsets, the carbon offset division of Green Mountain Energy Company, are pleased to announce that as of today, individuals everywhere can purchase verified emissions reductions (VERs) sourced exclusively from the Van Eck Forest Project. Van Eck is the first emissions reductions project registered and independently verified under the California Forest Protocols – the rigorous accounting standards adopted by the California Air Resources Board to help meet the state’s ambitious greenhouse gas reduction goals.

Through BeGreen’s website (www.begreennow.com) consumers can calculate their household’s carbon footprint and offset their emissions with the purchase of Van Eck VERs.

“BeGreen takes pride in offering consumers and businesses this easy option for reducing their carbon footprints by purchasing verified emissions reductions that meet the most stringent standards in the market today,” says Gillan Taddune, chief environmental officer of Green Mountain Energy Company. “The Van Eck Forest Project will not only help protect our planet from harmful carbon emissions, but also preserve this magnificent forestland for future generations.”

The 2,200-acre Van Eck Forest in Humboldt County, Calif., is a working redwood forest owned by the Fred M. Van Eck Forest Foundation and managed by the Pacific Forest Trust to permanently reduce more than 500,000 metric tons of C02 emissions over a 100-year period.

“This is a wonderful partnership for us,” says Connie Best, managing director of the Pacific Forest Trust. “We’ve been contacted by so many people who have worked hard to reduce their carbon footprint and want to offset what remains with Van Eck Forest emissions reductions. They have a lot of confidence in these offsets because of the stringent rules used to produce and verify them. The Forest Protocols govern certification of the Van Eck Forest Project to ensure that these reductions have real and lasting climate benefits.”

By choosing Van Eck VERs, consumers are supporting a working forest managed specifically to offset harmful greenhouse gas emissions by absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and storing it in its trees, their foilage, trunks and surrounding soil for hundreds of years or longer. These climate benefits are secured by a conservation easement that secures the Van Eck land and guides its sustainable management practices. The California Forest Protocols require that forest management activities deliver carbon gains that are additional to what the forest would normally provide under “business as usual” practices, and that emissions reductions are verified via a third-party certification process.

In addition to reducing emissions and increasing carbon stores, the stewardship forestry conducted by the Pacific Forest Trust on the Van Eck Forest protects water quality, restores biodiversity and provides sustainable timber products.

About BeGreen Carbon Offsets

BeGreen’s carbon calculators follow the EPA Climate Leaders methodology, which is based on the World Resources Institute’s Greenhouse Gas Protocol (WRI GHG), a widely accepted industry standard. All purchases and sales of BeGreen’s carbon offset projects are also verified by an independent auditing firm to ensure their quality and effectiveness.

About the Pacific Forest Trust

Nationally, PFT published two landmark reports: “America’s Private Forests: Status and Stewardship” (Island Press 2001) and “Forest Carbon in the United States.” Through its Working Forests, Winning Climate initiative, PFT is advising state governments and federal leaders about the inclusion of forest conservation and sustainable management in climate policies, markets and best-practices.
Under the leadership of co-owner Jenna Morton, a self-described "granola," this alliance is the N9NE Group’s most aggressive initiative to date towards a better environment. A combination of Green-e certified Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) and Forest Sequestration Offsets will render N9NE Steakhouse, Nove Italiano, Rain Nightclub, ghostbar, MOON Nightclub, and the Playboy Club carbon neutral.

"We live on this earth. It is the place we all call home," states Jenna. "I’m proud of the efforts we’ve made thus far, but carbon neutral doesn’t cut it anymore. We are reducing our impact on the front end. Our goal is to make going ‘negative’ positive."

The N9NE Group’s commitment to purchasing RECs from Green Mountain Energy Company’s BeGreen division helps drive the development of additional renewable energy sources by supporting the building and operation of cleaner energy projects like wind, solar, hydro, and biomass facilities. It will offset an annual average of 1.5 million pounds of carbon dioxide, a harmful greenhouse gas and leading contributor to global climate change. A portion will also be designated for the AMP-Ohio/Green Mountain Energy Wind Farm located in Bowling Green, Ohio. These RECs play an important role in continuing the funding for this wind turbine facility and help offset a portion of the emissions from electricity use, a leading cause of industrial air pollution.

"This purchase shows great commitment on the part of the N9NE Group, and it’s obvious that Jenna and her team are very passionate about protecting the environment for future generations," comments Gillan Taddune, chief environmental officer of Green Mountain Energy Company. "It’s one thing for a business to recognize its environmental impact. The N9NE Group is showing leadership by taking action to help affect change."

Additionally, Forest Sequestration Offsets were acquired to neutralize 100 percent of the natural gas emissions created by the venues in 2007. Trees will be planted in the Mendocino National Forest Hunter Fire Restoration Project through Green Mountain’s forest sequestration partner, American Forests, offsetting 490 metric tons of CO2.

This collaboration with BeGreen and Green Mountain Energy Company further builds on the N9NE Group’s continuous efforts to reduce its environmental impact. Jenna, the wife of N9NE Group founder Michael Morton and mother of three, drives a Volkswagen Jetta powered by recycled vegetable oil from N9NE Steakhouse. She has implemented a number of green practices and products throughout the N9NE Group venues. Their APEX System dishwashers not only calculate how much soap and water is used per person, but also regulate it by sounding an alarm when too much is used. The N9NE Group buys 100 percent recycled paper made from post-consumer fiber, Biorenewables glass cleaner, and ammonia and bleach-free All-Purpose Hydrogen Peroxide Cleaner. In addition, all bottles and cans are recycled, all back-of-the-house employees are given reusable water bottles to reduce plastic waste, and no aerosol cleaners are used.

Jenna is also dedicated to numerous other causes as Director of Community Relations for the N9NE Group. She actively supports DIFFA’s (Design Industry Foundation Fighting AIDS) Style Council, After School All-Stars, Keep Memory Alive, the ONE Campaign, League of Conservation Voters, Sierra Club, Clean Energy Coalition, and Conservation International, among others.

The N9NE Group, the Las Vegas-based company founded by Michael Morton and Scott DeGraff, is responsible for the creation and operation of groundbreaking restaurant and nightclub concepts in Chicago, Las Vegas, and Dallas. They launched their signature concepts, N9NE Steakhouse and ghostbar in 2000 in Chicago. With the 2001 opening of the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, they debuted N9NE Steakhouse, Rain Nightclub, ghostbar, and Skin Pool Lounge. After tens of millions of dollars in renovations, Skin was transformed into the new, sophisticated Palms Pool & Bungalows in June 2006. In fall 2006, additional N9NE Group nightspots were added to the Fantasy Tower including Nove Italiano, the Playboy Club Las Vegas, and MOON Nightclub. The $3 billion Victory Project in Dallas, TX, which also opened in 2006, is home to N9NE Steakhouse, ghostbar, and Nove Italiano. The Las Vegas venues are located in the Palms Casino Resort at 4321 West Flamingo Road.
