About the Mendocino National Forest Hunter Fire Restoration Project
The Grizzly Late Successional Reserve is critical habitat for the northern spotted owl habitat and was destroyed in the Hunter Fire. The Black Butte Watershed is a key watershed to the area. It is also critical habitat for North Coast steelhead and Coho salmon and is a spawning and rearing habitat for Winter-run Steelhead and Fall-run Chinook. There is little chance of natural conifer regeneration because of a lack of adjacent seed source. With the help from American Forests the Mendocino National Forest will plant 12,000 seedlings to increase the seed source and prevent the domination of brush species.
